Agios Ioannis of Malounta’s Primary School

A primary school has been in operation in our community since the end of the 19th century. The first primary school of Agios Ioannis Lefkosias was built in 1897. That school was housed in the building which today houses the village’s coffee-shop and which is not located far from the present primary school.

The idea for the construction of the school belonged to two residents of the village, Nicolas Ttigkas and Loucas Vasileiou, who wished for the children of the community to have the opportunity to be educated in their own village. Their wish was fulfilled with the help of the community president at the time Charalambis Michael (Taggalaki), who succeeded in obtaining a construction permit by the British authorities. The first teacher of the Primary School of Agios Ioannis Lefkosias was a man called Kronides and the school was attended by 8 students.

After 1952-53, the school moved to the new building which was constructed after efforts were made by the president of the community at the time Argyros Hadjimarkou. Today, that building houses the 3rd and 4th grade. As the number of students was rising, the school building was being extended. In particular, in 1966-67, another classroom was added to it, while a few more classrooms were added in 1974 and another one in the past few years.
